Brown leather seats showcased in the interior of a Ford Expedition.Leather upholstery is one of the best you can choose for your vehicle. They’re soft and luxurious, and they can give your vehicle a more refined look. However, regular maintenance is essential to keep your vehicle’s seats in good condition. Here are some useful maintenance tips for leather car seats.

Stay Out of the Sun

Along with causing sunburns, ultraviolet light can damage your leather car seats. When possible, park in the shade or in a garage or carport. You can also place a sunshade over your windows before you park your car. These are inexpensive, and they can help you keep the inside of your car cool along with protecting the seats. Extreme, sudden changes in temperature can damage your car seats as well. You should park your car in a location where it won’t get too hot or cold.

Keep Sharp Objects Away

Tools, keys, or other objects in your pockets can cause leather to rip and tear over time. Don’t keep sharp objects in your pockets. Instead, put them in your bag, glove box, or other storage spaces while you drive. If you’re transporting chairs or other big, heavy objects, place a blanket or towel over your seats to protect the seats before you place any items on them.

Clean Your Leather Regularly

The debris and dirt on your leather upholstery can make tiny tears and cracks that become bigger over time. Cleaning your leather seats at least every six months is important for keeping them in good condition. You can have your car’s interior detailed by a professional, or you can do it yourself. If you decide to clean it yourself, start by vacuuming the interior thoroughly. You can use your household vacuum cleaner and a hand-held attachment, or you can use a smaller, portable vacuum. After that, use a leather car upholstery cleaner to get any dirt in hard-to-reach places. Before you start, spot test the cleaner in a spot that’s not noticeable. Some cleaners could bleach or stain some types of leather. When you’re done, wipe off the cleaner and dry the seats thoroughly.

Condition Your Leather

After cleaning, using leather conditioner will help keep your seats in good condition for longer. It prevents cracking and wear and provides additional protection against the sun. You should cover your seats evenly and then let the leather absorb the conditioner for at least a few hours. Then, wipe off the extra conditioner with a soft, microfiber cloth.

Keep Your Car Clean

Keeping your vehicle clean and organized can help protect your leather seats as well. Avoid eating in your car or leaving trash there, and make sure everything stays looking neat. That way, you’ll be ready to show your vehicle to a potential buyer anytime.

Taking good care of your car’s leather seats can help you keep its value high. It can also make commuting or going on long trips much more comfortable. Follow this advice to keep your leather seats looking like new for years.
